Of Darkest Nights began in 2011 with a simple goal: create music and share it with anyone willing to listen.

Created by Chris Weststrate, the project started as a creative outlet for remixes and instrumentals inspired by the artists and sounds that had a lasting impact on me. Throughout its early years, Of Darkest Nights explored everything from alternative rock and industrial music to electronic and cinematic influences, building a catalog of more than a dozen remix albums and EPs released entirely for free.

The project was never created with dreams of fame, record deals, or financial success. From the very beginning, Of Darkest Nights existed because creating music was something I felt compelled to do. Whether a song reached thousands of listeners or only a handful, the reward was always the same: bringing an idea to life and sharing it with others.

For more than a decade, that passion fueled countless releases and creative experiments. During those years, Of Darkest Nights became known primarily for its remixes, reimagining songs from artists that helped shape my musical identity. The project continued to grow, but as streaming services became the dominant way people consumed music, the future of a remix-focused project became increasingly uncertain. Copyright limitations and the changing music landscape made it difficult to continue moving forward in the same direction.

By 2024, Of Darkest Nights stood at a crossroads.

Rather than ending the project, I made the decision to reinvent it.

For years, I had files from years of lyrics, song concepts, unfinished ideas, and stories I wanted to tell. What had always been missing was a practical way to transform those ideas into fully realized songs. Emerging AI music technology offered a new creative path forward—not as a replacement for creativity, but as a tool that could help bring years of ideas to life.

The transition marked the beginning of a new era for Of Darkest Nights. Instead of focusing on remixes, the project shifted toward original music built around songwriting, storytelling, emotion, and atmosphere. Every release begins with a human idea: a lyric, a memory, a feeling, a question, or an experience. AI serves as part of the creative process, helping transform those ideas into finished songs while allowing a single independent creator to pursue a larger artistic vision than would otherwise be possible.

The result has been a series of original releases that continue to expand the world of Of Darkest Nights. Albums such as Bleed The Sun, Of Unknown Origins, The Darkened Path Ahead, and Catastrophic have explored themes of loss, resilience, personal growth, fractured relationships, self-discovery, and the struggle to find meaning during life's darkest moments.

Musically, Of Darkest Nights blends modern rock, industrial influences, electronic textures, cinematic soundscapes, and emotionally driven songwriting. Some songs are heavy and aggressive. Others are reflective and vulnerable. Together, they tell stories about surviving difficult seasons of life and finding the strength to keep moving forward.

Today, Of Darkest Nights remains exactly what it has always been at its core: a passion project.

It is not a business plan. It is not an attempt to chase trends or become famous. It is simply a place where ideas become songs, emotions become stories, and creativity continues to evolve.
